TEESTA VS GOLIATH

‘ Satan never sleeps’ is a movie which was released in 1962 based on a story by Pearl S. Buck. It was quite a hit showing how two missionary priests took on the power and might of the Communist People’s Party of China in spite of the latter doing everything to make life difficult for them. Strangely enough, the story (with necessary adaptations) can be applied to Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand who are today hounded and victimised by a very powerful apparatus belonging to ‘the Government of India’; this machinery is doing all they can to demoralise, … Continue reading TEESTA VS GOLIATH

Activist Targeting Modi’s Government Becomes Government’s Target

By DAVID BARSTOW MUMBAI — One of India’s best-known human rights activists, Teesta Setalvad, was brewing her morning tea on July 14 when she got a telephone call from her security guard. “C.B.I. is at the gate, ma’am,” the guard said, referring to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the federal police. Before long, 16 agents were searching her family’s compound on the shore of the Arabian Sea in Juhu, an upscale suburb of Mumbai. They searched all day, then all night, poring over Ms. Setalvad’s diaries, opening her jewelry boxes, digging through the linen closet. Not even the bedroom drawers … Continue reading Activist Targeting Modi’s Government Becomes Government’s Target

Yet another letter to Modiji by Meenakshi Dahiya

Modiji….Pranam! How is the heat in Dubai? Hopefully, better than the Monsoon session of the parliament. By the way, it really is a pity you have to fly on Air India One, paid for by the tax-payers’ money, and not commercial. Imagine the frequent flier miles you would have earned that way! You could have used those after your tenure completes in 3 years and a bit. Also, did you register for maximum number of selfies with the Guiness book of records people? You really must! You looked like a ‘Raja’ for your 15th of August speech. The look, the … Continue reading Yet another letter to Modiji by Meenakshi Dahiya

Rattling the cage

Chastised by the courts, the CBI is singing tunelessly in a low key In the public imagination, the CBI has superhero powers. It is the agency of last resort, which is clamoured for when the public is distrustful of the police and the local administration, or when cases are so coloured by political interests that the apparatus of law and order freezes. But in reality, it is scarcely infallible, with a strike rate of about 65 per cent. And the “caged parrot” has an extraordinary capacity for appearing to be a punitive weapon of the government. This week, it has … Continue reading Rattling the cage
